          Peak Color for October 22-28, 2021

          Orchards, romantic drives, football tailgates, hayrides and the scent of fresh, crisp air are all sure indications of autumn in Michigan is in full swing. From the Keweenaw Peninsula to our southern borders, fall color will splash almost every leaf around.

          For the Keweenaw Peninsula, Western Upper Peninsula, Marquette County and Dickinson County, peak has already passed. The area is still displaying stunning color, but the show will not linger much longer. So, you’ll want to plan to trip to these area soon.
          Driving up the M-35 through Escanaba, Gladstone, and onward towards Big Bay de Noc in Manistique, the trees are exhibiting great depth of color with bright reds, yellows and golds, giving an incredible ombre of color.

          Munising and Pictured Rocks are at peak now.  While Sault Ste. Marie is in the homestretch for fall colors in the Eastern Upper Peninsula!  Many areas have already peaked or are in the process.  Some trees are further along than others.  Maples near the Soo Locks Park are a rich crimson red and are starting to turn purple.  Locals advise that this upcoming weekend will be the best time to see area color in its prime.  The weather is perfect for a drive along the Curly Lewis Memorial Highway to see the colors up close.  Good viewing is expected to last into next week.

          Driving towards Michigan’s Northeast, Alpena is at peak now, showcasing brilliant fall colors throughout the area.  The bold oranges, reds and yellows of fall have finally entered the scene on the Sunrise Coast.  Color change is later this year due to the unseasonably warm weather which has provided ample time to explore and enjoy the cool, crisp air.

          In the Northwest Lower Peninsula, Charlevoix is less than one week away from prime viewing conditions.  The area invites viewers to experience the recreational opportunities of more than 20 trails and natures preserves. 

          This coming weekend is the perfect time to plan a trip to #PureLudington, where the leaves are only just starting to turn!  It's a wonderful time to be outdoors for recreational opportunities that Ludington and Mason County afford.  Travel to the Ludington State Park, where you'll find 21 miles of marked hiking and biking trails through the forest and along lakes, a river and sand dunes. Pack a picnic and plan to spend the day exploring.  Cartier Park, the Ludington School Forest, and Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area are other locations to take in the gorgeous colors and scenery. Meander through colors by car, foot, bike, or kayak; then enjoy a delicious dinner in Downtown Ludington, just minutes away from the beautiful parks.  Leaf peepers in the Ludington area are reporting to be one to two weeks until peak color completely transforms the landscape.

          Silver Lake Sand Dunes, Whitehall, Holland, Saugatuck-Douglas are all reporting to be less than one week to peak. In and around Grand Haven, the trees, especially near the Lakeshore, are still several weeks behind and many are still mostly green!  However, away from the shore, local foliage is reported to be only one to two weeks from peak.

          Mount Pleasant is one or two weeks.  You’ll find good color at city parks, gold courses and along area hiking and biking trails. 

          If you’re traveling in Southwestern Michigan this weekend, you will see touches of yellows and purples along the Lake Michigan shoreline from maple trees in and around  St. Joseph. 

          Trees are just starting to change along the streets of Marshall, making this the perfect weather to explore the largest National Historic Landmark District in a small rural town. Enjoy a virtual textbook of 19th Century restored architecture examples along beautiful tree-lined streets on a self-guided walking tour.  Switch from leaves to treasures and visit the downtown shopping district, where you will discover 30 life-size skeletons waiting for your visit.  The area anticipates peak color in one to two weeks.

          Peak fall color has hit the Ann Arbor area.  The area is packed with parks to view the beautiful fall colors, as well as orchards, mills, and corn mazes to get in the spirit of the brightly colored season.  MathThe University of featuring five beautiful trails (one of which is universally accessible), spanning over 90 acres and provides stunning views of fall foliage.  Some additional top locations for fall color spotting in the area include Rolling Hills Park (Ypsilanti), Gallup Park, Dexter-Huron Metropark (Dexter), Waterloo Recreation Area (Chelsea).

          Livingston County and most other Southeastern Michigan communities will see the season’s beautiful fall, jewel-tones colors in one to two weeks.
